Josh Barnett Protégé Banned from Gym After Getting Caught in Creepy Sting

Community is grappling with serious allegations after a promising MMA pro was permanently banned from his gym following a detention involving a younger student. Johnny Robles, a 28-year-old bantamweight with a 10-3 professional record, was removed from California Mixed Martial Arts (CMMA) after video footage surfaced showing his detention by police in Downey, California.

Robles has a connection to UFC veteran Josh Barnett, who had been mentoring the young star. CMMA, where Barnett trains pros and Robles served as a wrestling and MMA coach, acted with unprecedented speed in addressing the situation.

“A video is circulating showing one of our coaches being detained over an incident ” the gym stated in an official announcement. “We have just been made aware of this situation, and effective immediately, this individual has been permanently removed from our organization.”

The gym’s response reflects a growing trend in martial arts communities toward zero tolerance for inappropriate behavior.

BJJ Black belt Jeff Messina, speaking on the Combat Creative podcast, recently addressed similar issues in martial arts academies. “I’ve kicked people out that are very talented in Jiu-Jitsu… I don’t want to have that cancer in the gym,” Messina explained, highlighting how technical skill cannot excuse problematic behavior.

CMMA’s statement reinforced their commitment to maintaining a safe environment. “We do not condone, support, or tolerate this type of behavior in any way,” they declared.

The allegations come at a crucial time in Robles’ career. The Rialto, California native turned professional in 2019 and had been building momentum in the bantamweight division. He currently holds the regional bantamweight title and made international headlines in 2024 when he secured a knockout victory over James Settle in just 23 seconds while competing for Cage Warriors.

His most recent victory came in June 2025, when he defeated Albert Morales by split decision. Under Barnett’s guidance, Robles had been developing not just as a MMA pro but as an instructor, taking on coaching responsibilities at CMMA.

Police have not yet confirmed whether formal charges have been filed, leaving many questions unanswered about the legal proceedings.

CMMA’s decisive action demonstrates this philosophy in practice. The gym has committed to providing a “safe, respectful, and positive environment” for all members and encouraged anyone with concerns to come forward. “We appreciate your trust and understanding as we handle this with the seriousness it deserves,” they stated.
