“Brazilian jiu-jitsu legend Marcus ‘Buchecha’ Almeida‘s highly anticipated UFC debut ended in disappointment at UFC Abu Dhabi as Slovakia’s Martin Buday pulled off an upset victory via unanimous decision.”
The decorated grappler, who entered the octagon as a heavy favorite with -310 odds compared to Buday‘s +250, struggled to impose his world-class ground game against the savvy heavyweight. Despite his reputation as one of the greatest BJJ competitors of all time and a solid 5-1 record in ONE Championship, Buchecha found himself outmaneuvered by an opponent who had clearly done his homework.
The opening round set the tone for what would become a frustrating evening for the Brazilian. While Buchecha managed to secure an early single-leg takedown, Buday‘s takedown defense proved exceptional. The Slovak MMA star consistently scrambled back to his feet and stuffed subsequent attempts with apparent ease. When Buchecha resorted to pulling guard to get the action to the ground, Buday simply disengaged and forced the heavyweight grappler to stand back up.
This tactical approach clearly rattled Buchecha who found himself in the unfamiliar position of having to rely more heavily on his striking. Though both men exchanged heavy blows, Buday emerged victorious in the round by successfully neutralizing his opponent’s primary weapon and dictating where the contest took place.
The second round offered a glimpse of what many expected from Buchecha. Coming forward with renewed aggression, he finally managed to drag Buday to the canvas with a powerful takedown. Once in his element, the Brazilian smoothly transitioned to half guard before taking his opponent’s back. However, Buday‘s composure under pressure shone through as he survived the grappling exchange and remarkably ended the round in top position though not before absorbing several punches from the frustrated Buchecha.
The final frame proved decisive for Buday‘s victory. He opened strongly by rocking Buchecha with a clean left hand then maintained his tactical discipline by staying alert for takedown attempts. As fatigue set in, Buchecha‘s desperation became evident through increasingly telegraphed takedown attempts that Buday easily anticipated and defended.
Though Buchecha did manage one more brief moment of success, getting deep on a shot and temporarily taking Buday‘s back with both hooks secured, he couldn’t capitalize on the position. Buday defended the choke attempt regained his footing and turned the tables after a sloppy transition attempt from his opponent. The round concluded with Buday on top landing effective ground strikes to seal his impressive performance.
The judges’ scorecards reflected Buday‘s tactical mastery with all three officials scoring the contest 29-28 in his favor. The unanimous decision represented a significant upset in the heavyweight division and a harsh welcome to the UFC for one of grappling’s most accomplished athletes.
