Charles Oliveira: My parents stopped other payments so they could put me in jiu-jitsu

Former UFC lightweight champion Charles Oliveira opened up about the extraordinary sacrifices his parents made to launch his combat sports career. In a recent post bout interview, Oliveira reveaed the depth of gratitude he carries for their unwavering belief in him.

Speaking in his native Portuguese, the Brazilian struggled to contain his tears as he reflected on the financial hardships his family endured to support his dreams. His father, in particular, made choices that would prove instrumental in shaping the champion Oliveira has become.

“If my father and mother hadn’t believed in me, I would have NEVER made it here, they stopped paying for their own things to put my brother and me through jiu-jitsu,” Oliveira said, his voice thick with emotion.

The sacrifice went deeper than simply tightening the family budget. Oliveira revealed that his father would secretly redirect money meant for household bills to cover competition fees for both Charles and his brother.

When his mother would inquire about whether certain expenses had been paid, his father would lie, claiming everything was settled. In reality, he had prioritized his sons’ tournament entries over his own obligations.

“He would stop paying for his own things to be able to put me and my brother in jiu-jitsu championships,” Oliveira explained. “My mother would ask if a bill had been paid, and he would say yes, already paid. It was a lie—he had paid for our events instead.”

For Oliveira, who has risen from poverty in the favelas of São Paulo to become one of the UFC’s most exciting champions, the memory of those sacrifices remains fresh. The financial strain his parents endured wasn’t simply about missing luxury items,it was about prioritizing their children’s potential over their own immediate needs.

“If he hadn’t done all of this for me, I wouldn’t be here to create this beautiful story,” Oliveira said, his appreciation evident in every word. “And he knows how much I love him, how much all of this is for him.”

The emotional tribute offers a window into the support system that helped forge one of mixed martial arts’ most resilient competitors. Oliveira’s journey from humble beginnings to championship stands as a testament not only to his own determination but to the quiet heroism of parents who believed in their children’s dreams enough to sacrifice their own comfort.
