Chael Sonnen reveals he falsely claimed to be a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt when he was just 18 years old

Chael Sonnen recently shared a candid story about falsely claiming to be a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt when he was just 18 years old. The MMA legend recounted how his audacious lie was quickly exposed.

In January 1996, Sonnen arrived at the University of Oregon as a wrestler who had just discovered the UFC. With the naivety of youth, he devised what he thought was a foolproof plan:

“I know I’m going to be champion because, no matter what, I will not tap out,”

he explained. His reasoning was simple—if he never tapped, he couldn’t lose.

When Sonnen joined Hard Knocks Gym for Muay Thai training, he was asked about his belt ranks.

“I had been told that you are whatever belt you’re willing to compete against,”

he said. Despite never having done “jiu-jitsu, not one single day,” he confidently wrote down that he was a black belt.

The gym had two legitimate practitioners, who traveled to Arizona every weekend to train under the legendary Megaton (Mackenzie Dern’s dad). When they discovered someone claiming to be a black belt at their gym, they politely invited Sonnen to train.

“They were real gentlemen to me,”

Sonnen recalled.

“They were not busting a fake black belt.”

During the workout, reality hit hard.

“They were stretching me so fast and so effortlessly,”

Sonnen admitted. The experience revealed that

“there is a system to this, and this is a sport, and it deserves respect, and not just somebody coming that thinks they’re a tough guy and can write down that they’re a black belt.”

Sonnen‘s respect for legitimate black belts deepened through this experience.

Sonnen credited those early teachers with showing him the proper way to handle the situation:

“They got the mentality of how you treat other people right.”

This humbling experience taught the future MMA star that martial arts credentials must be earned through dedication and training, not simply claimed through bravado.
