Cristopher Lencioni is currently undergoing a challenging rehabilitation process and facing an uncertain future following a heart attack on June 8 in Spokane, Washington.
Lencioni, who was preparing for a clash at Bellator 298, collapsed during a jiu-jitsu training at a gym. He wasn’t in a submission at the moment of his collapse. Paramedics responded quickly and used a defibrillator multiple times before rushing him to a nearby hospital.
Unfortunately, subsequent medical tests revealed that Lencioni suffered brain damage as a result of the heart attack. He was recently discharged from the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) but remains in a state of disordered consciousness, which often accompanies traumatic brain injuries. His wife, Marca Lencioni, shared that doctors are carefully monitoring his progress and searching for signs of improvement.
Despite the challenges he faces, Lencioni’s spirit remains strong. During a recent visit, he exhibited signs of responsiveness, smiling and removing his hand from a bag of ice. Marca Lencioni emphasized that due to his overall health and athleticism, the medical team cannot predict the extent of his recovery.
The complexity of the human brain makes it difficult to provide a definitive prognosis, but his tenacity and determination give hope to those around him.
While Lencioni appeared outwardly healthy, doctors suspect that the heart attack may have been triggered by Long QT syndrome, a potentially life-threatening heart rhythm disorder.
A routine electrocardiogram (EKG) conducted in 2019 did not detect any abnormalities associated with this syndrome. Marca Lencioni revealed that the lower chambers of his heart were not pumping correctly, and his heart rhythm was excessively high.
Craig Jones recently remarked about the depravity of internet trolls hounding Lencioni’s wife on his podcast, detailing the conspiracy theorists who were tying Lencioni’s issues to Covid, despite him never getting the vaccine as per his wife.
The Lencioni family is now confronted with the financial burden of extensive medical care. Although Cristopher Lencioni is currently uninsured, his medical bills have already surpassed $300,000. In an effort to alleviate the financial strain, a GoFundMe campaign has been initiated, aiming to raise $250,000. The MMA community has shown tremendous support, contributing nearly $29,000 to date. However, the ultimate cost of treatment and recovery is expected to far exceed this initial goal.
As Lencioni transitions from the ICU to a long-term care facility in Idaho, his wife is seeking additional assistance. She acknowledges the potential for state insurance coverage but recognizes the need to explore alternative therapies and treatments, such as stem cell therapy. Marca Lencioni hopes to pursue these options in Mexico or Colombia, as they could potentially aid her husband’s recovery.
Throughout this challenging journey, Bellator officials have shown unwavering support, offering assistance to the Lencioni family. They have been described as “amazing” and have provided invaluable support during this difficult time.
Regarding Lencioni’s future in MMA, Marca Lencioni remains optimistic and refuses to place limitations on what he can achieve.
Lencioni previously competed against Kevin Lee at Chael Sonnen’s Submission Underground and various other competitions. He had achieved the BJJ black belt a while ago.
