Tye Ruotolo submits Shozo Isojima in the very first round

The young Brazilian jiu-jitsu phenom delivered a great performance. Tye Ruotolo demonstrated why he’s considered one of the brightest prospects in mixed martial arts, dismantling previously undefeated Japanese competitor Shozo Isojima with a dominant first round submission at 2:26.

From the opening bell Ruotolo appeared remarkably calm and composed while mixing his striking attack effectively. The ONE welterweight submission grappling world champion threw calculated shots before transitioning to what he does best—grappling. After initially keeping the action standing and landing a series of punishing knees Ruotolo executed a clean uchi mata throw that sent the judo black belt to the canvas in dramatic fashion.

Once the contest hit the ground it became Ruotolo’s world entirely. The youngest IBJJF world champion in history quickly advanced to the mount position and began landing shots on his overmatched opponent. Isojima, searching for an escape, made a critical tactical error by exposing his back to the Atos standout.

That moment was all Ruotolo needed. With the instinct of an elite grappler he seized the opening, wrapping his arms around Isojima’s neck and securing a tight rear naked choke. The submission was locked in with precision, leaving the Japanese competitor no choice but to tap and ending his undefeated run.

The impressive performance earned Ruotolo more than another win. ONE Championship Chairman and CEO Chatri Sityodtong awarded the rising star a $50,000 performance bonus in recognition of his beautiful submission work, adding to an already memorable evening.

Now sporting an unblemished 2-0 record in MMA Ruotolo continues to prove that his transition from pure grappling to mixed martial arts is progressing ahead of schedule. Despite his self assessment that

“I looked really sloppy looking at the replays”

the performance was anything but, showcasing a well rounded skill set that points to an exciting future in the lightweight division.
