Gordon Ryan is widely regarded as the most dominant figure in modern Brazilian jiu-jitsu. Yet he’s also highly controversial. He has sparked a big reaction with comments on Instagram in the middle of a personal crisis. While his wife, Nathalia Amato Santoro, faces serious criminal charges in Texas, Ryan has remained silent on her situation.
There are also those who question if they’re actually married. This has been proven by their own statements on official bail forms.
Instead, Ryan used the platform to endorse the latest rhetoric from President Donald Trump.
In a now-viral post, Ryan wrote:
“Public hangings of politicians who do nothing but raise cost of living through terrible policy, lie, steal from you, and infringe on your rights all while blaming whites, Putin, billionaires, and others would be one of the things that actually fixes this Country. Fact.”
The caption read:
“Trump is definitely on the right track here”
“Only its the citizens who should be holding government accountable, like our founding documents state.”
The post comes amid a national controversy. Trump recently went afer Democratic lawmakers who appeared in a video reminding military and intelligence personnel of their constitutional duty to refuse unlawful orders. Figures such as Senator Elissa Slotkin, Senator Mark Kelly, and Representative Jason Crow urged service members to uphold the Constitution and reject illegal commands. Trump’s response was immediate and severe, calling the lawmakers’ statements “seditious behavior from traitors” and retweeting a post suggesting they should be hanged.
Legal experts have stressed that while presidents have immunity from prosecution for official acts this does not make illegal orders lawful and reminding service members of this right is not “seditious.” Ryan, however, appears undeterred by the controversy, framing Trump’s intense rhetoric as patriotic and citizen-driven accountability.
Meanwhile, the BJJ world is embroiled in a separate scandal. Ryan’s wife, Nathalia Amato Santoro, was arrested twice in October in Travis County, Texas. Court records show she was involved in a high-speed chase exceeding 120 mph, during which police discovered two loaded firearms in her vehicle. Days later, she was charged with reckless driving after a separate collision that snapped a utility pole in half. Bond was set at $3,000 for each case.
The arrests drew attention from Craig Jones, Ryan’s longtime rival, who turned the incidents into a mix of mockery and pointed criticism across social media.
Yet Ryan has remained silent on Santoro’s legal troubles, opting instead to use his platform to amplify messaging against lawmakers. Perhaps the most interesting aspect of this situation has been the effect it has had on the BJJ community at large. R/BJJ has taken to opening up a discussion on this particular statement from Ryan, whereas they police all of his other takes and opinions. Regardless of how you feel about Ryan and his politics, the most fascinating part has been watching him fail to pivot his social media into a political platform as his professional jiu-jitsu career fades. Considering his gifted insight into sports and undisputed dominance, it’s sad to see him parroting others instead of contributing to the sport he helped elevate to the biggest stage.
