Purple belt Terri M. D’Onofrio recently became an internet sensation after security footage from an open mat session showed her accidentally putting a male training partner to sleep during a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu roll. The video captured the entire exchange and has since gone viral, collecting more than 900,000 likes on social media.
The grainy security camera footage shows D’Onofrio applying what appears to be a shoulder pressure choke from side control. As she advances to mount, her training partner gradually loses consciousness and goes limp beneath her. What makes the clip especially striking is that D’Onofrio appears unaware of what has happened, continuing to improve her position while her partner remains motionless.
Many practitioners noted that these situations often occur when a choke feels manageable rather than overwhelming, leading the person defending to delay tapping while attempting to escape.
Experienced coaches pointed out that the most dangerous strangles are not always the ones that feel immediately overwhelming. When a submission feels tight but not urgent, practitioners may convince themselves they can work out of it, only to fade suddenly. This is why awareness from both training partners is critical, including recognizing when resistance changes or when a partner stops actively defending.
Criticism in the discussion focused on awareness from the top position. Some observers felt the signs should have been obvious, especially from mount where facial cues and body tension are clearly visible. They argued that continuing to apply pressure while advancing position showed a lack of presence and attentiveness to the partner’s condition.
Others interpreted the situation differently, suggesting the male practitioner may have waited too long to tap, possibly due to ego or underestimating the effectiveness of the pressure. A few reactions downplayed the seriousness entirely, framing the exchange as an awkward but not uncommon moment in live rolling environments.
Despite the differing opinions, the footage has increasingly been used as a teaching example. Coaches and students alike have referenced it to highlight the importance of tapping early, monitoring training partners closely and understanding that control positions can still produce rapid shutdowns if pressure is applied correctly.
For D’Onofrio, the viral clip has unexpectedly put her technical ability under a spotlight. The footage demonstrates strong pressure, positional awareness and clean transitions, even if the outcome went beyond what anyone intended during a routine training session.
