MMA veteran and outspoken commentator Chael Sonnen has never been one to mince words, and his latest remarks on MMA star work ethic are no exception. The former UFC title challenger recently shared his candid perspective on the frequency of competition in mixed martial arts and why he holds certain athletes in higher regard than others.
Sonnen expressed a singular frustration with the sport he has devoted his life to: the limited competition schedule most MMA stars maintain.
“I got one resentment towards our sport, one, which is that we only do it three times a year.”
He stated, highlighting what he views as a fundamental issue with modern MMA.
His stance is uncompromising. According to Sonnen, competing just three times annually while fans work and save their hard-earned money to attend events creates an obligation that should be respected.
“I can’t even tell you the lack of respect that I have for a guy that misses a martial arts fig ht for any reason.”
He declared, making clear this represents his personal view on professional commitment.
The former middleweight contender elaborated on his position with characteristic bluntness.
“I couldn’t possibly care if that’s what you do for a living and you’re asked to go to work three times a year. I could not possibly care how you feel on one of those three days when all the fans in the audience are working and saving up money to come watch. I couldn’t possibly care if your arm is broken.”
This philosophy extends beyond mere attendance at scheduled bouts. Sonnen explained that his assessment of MMA stars as professionals hinges on their frequency of competition.
I don’t respect (them) because they only work three times a year. I don’t respect anybody that works three times a year. I don’t care what your job is. You’re not going to have my respect. Not as a man.”
However, Sonnen’s commentary was not entirely critical. He reserved genuine admiration for athletes who actively seek additional competitive opportunities between their scheduled MMA appearances.
“I really like these guys that go and find competitions.”
He said, praising MMA stars who participate in jiu-jitsu tournaments, wrestling matches and other grappling events during their downtime from MMA.
This approach represents what Sonnen views as the proper mentality for a professional combat sports athlete. Rather than treating the sport as a part-time endeavor with lengthy periods of inactivity, these competitors demonstrate dedication by continuously testing themselves against opposition in various disciplines.
