Ralph Gracie Promotes Bolsonaro’s Son To BJJ Black Belt Despite Never Having Trained Jiu Jitsu

Ralph Gracie posted on Instagram this week that he had awarded a symbolic black belt to Senator Flávio Bolsonaro, son of former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro.

The ceremony drew immediate attention for one straightforward reason: Flávio Bolsonaro has never trained Brazilian jiu-jitsu.

This is not the first time the Gracie family has extended the honor to a Bolsonaro. In October 2018, just days before the second round of Brazil’s presidential election, Robson Gracie, a 9th degree coral belt and son of BJJ founder Carlos Gracie Sr., awarded an honorary black belt to Jair Bolsonaro himself, a man who had likewise never trained seriously on the mats.

Bolsonaro went on to win the presidency by a significant margin, and the Gracie family’s ties to the Bolsonaro political circle have remained visible ever since.

Ralph Gracie confirmed the latest promotion in his Instagram post, framing it as a personal continuation of his father’s gesture.

“My father, Robson Gracie, symbolically paid this tribute to President Jair Bolsonaro as a gesture of respect and recognition,” he wrote. “Yesterday, I had the honor of continuing that same gesture, symbolically placing the black belt on Senator Flávio Bolsonaro.”

He framed the rank not as a measure of technical achievement but as something more philosophical.

“In Jiu-Jitsu, the black belt goes far beyond technique; it represents values such as discipline, honor, loyalty, and respect. More than a belt, this was a moment of continuity, tradition, and recognition between two families.”

“In these moments, there is no room for retreat. It’s eye to eye, without masks and without excuses. It’s the window of the soul wide open, revealing who you really are. There, words are worthless without action. What you say, you do. What you promise, you fulfill. Because it is in times of pressure that character speaks loudest, and the truth of each man comes to the surface.”

Gracie disabled the comments section on the post entirely, a choice that, for those familiar with his public history, came as little surprise.

Ralph Gracie carries considerable legal history into any conversation about his character and standing in the BJJ community.

In 2018, he was captured on video attacking Flavio Almeida at the IBJJF No-Gi World Championships in California. The footage showed Gracie elbowing Almeida in the face, knocking him unconscious, and continuing the assault while Almeida was on the ground.

Gracie’s student Lincoln Pereira also joined the attack. Almeida suffered a concussion and lost two front teeth.

Gracie pleaded guilty to a felony assault charge and was sentenced to 180 days in jail, three years of probation, restitution, and mandatory anger management. He was barred from competing, coaching, and attending IBJJF events.

After an arrest warrant was issued in April 2019, he fled to Brazil and missed four court appearances before eventually returning to the United States. He served approximately three months of his six-month sentence.

Honorary black belt ceremonies in BJJ have generated debate before. Robson Gracie awarded one to a Chinese businessman in 2017, recognizing his contributions to developing the sport in China. That recipient was at least a blue belt.

For Flávio Bolsonaro, there is no such qualification on record. The senator has no documented training history in BJJ.
