Brazilian jiu-jitsu legend and UFC star Bia Mesquita has spoken out against Ailin Perez‘s controversial celebration at a recent UFC event, calling the Argentine fighter’s behavior inappropriate and beneath the standards of professional mixed martial arts.
Mesquita, a 10-time jiu-jitsu world champion who transitioned to MMA in 2023, addressed Perez’s actions during an appearance on the Direto de Vegas podcast in Las Vegas. The incident in question occurred when Perez performed a twerking dance in front of her opponent following a victory, a moment that quickly spread across social media and generated significant debate within the fighting community.
“I don’t like that type of attitude. It’s not feminine,” Mesquita stated bluntly. “I want to show people there’s a better way to conduct yourself.”
The 35-year-old elaborated that while Perez’s performance generated views and attention, the ends don’t justify the means.
“I think there are ways for you to go viral. I don’t think I would trade any views to have that kind of attitude.”
Mesquita emphasized that respect should always come first in competition, regardless of what happened before the fight or what was said during the promotional buildup.
“When you disrespect another person, be it the opponent, the referee, or anyone else, I think that disrespect puts you at a bad level,” she explained. “A person poor in mental capability.”
The Brazilian star suggested that Perez’s dominant performance in the fight itself would have been a sufficient response to any pre-fight comments.
“I think she brought herself down to the level of an opponent who had spoken badly about her by reacting that way. We should always try to rise above those situations and carry ourselves with class rather than stooping to our opponent’s level.”
Mesquita acknowledged that attention-seeking behavior has become commonplace in modern MMA, particularly in the social media era. However, she believes athletes can promote themselves and their fights without compromising their dignity.
“I think there are more healthy and cool ways to go viral and be able to promote yourself,” she noted. “If it’s to go viral, be an example with positive things.”
Throughout the interview, she discussed her commitment to being a positive influence, particularly for young athletes. Having spent time coaching children at the Gracie Humaita academy in San Diego before the podcast appearance, she stressed the importance of setting proper examples.
Mesquita, who currently ranks 11th in the UFC women’s flyweight division at 125 pounds (57 kg), has built her early MMA career on professionalism and steady improvement. With three consecutive UFC victories, all by submission, she has established herself as a contender without resorting to theatrical antics or controversial behavior.
