WATCH: Eight players ejected following wild 5v5 scrap during hockey game

The game between the New York Rangers and the New Jersey Devils at Madison Square Garden erupted into chaos merely two seconds after the puck drop on Wednesday night.

Right from the onset in New York, spirited Rangers newcomer Matt Rempe and Devils’ defenseman Kurtis MacDermid engaged in a heated exchange, shedding their gloves and exchanging blows.

As the tension escalated, all ten players found themselves embroiled in the fray, but the focal point remained the intense confrontation between Rempe and MacDermid, exacerbated by a lingering history from the previous encounter between the two teams on March 11.

During that prior match, tensions simmered as MacDermid’s invitation to engage in a skirmish was rebuffed by Rempe. However, later in the game, Rempe’s high elbow resulted in Devils’ defenseman Jonas Siegenthaler exiting the game and subsequently led to Rempe’s suspension for four games.

On the recent occasion, Rempe and MacDermid’s altercation extended beyond the initial scuffle, persisting at center ice even after the other skirmishes had concluded. Consequently, four players from each team received game misconducts merely two seconds into the game.

Accompanying Rempe in the early dismissal were New York’s defensemen Jacob Trouba and K’Andre Miller, along with forward Barclay Goodrow. On the Devils’ side, defensemen Kevin Bahl and John Marino, as well as forwards Chris Tierney and MacDermid, were similarly ejected from the game.

Each of the ten players involved received five-minute fighting penalties. Meanwhile, on the sidelines, Rangers’ head coach Peter Laviolette and Devils’ interim coach Travis Green found themselves embroiled in their own exchange following the tumultuous altercation.

The chaos didn’t cease there, as at the 4:27 mark of the first period, New York’s Will Cuylle engaged in a bout with New Jersey’s Dawson Mercer, sparked by Cuylle’s hit on the Devils’ Brendan Smith.

Rempe’s reputation for on-ice altercations precedes him, with this latest incident marking the third consecutive ejection from games against the Devils. His aggressive style of play has earned him notoriety, accumulating 47 penalty minutes, two fights, and three game misconducts in just over five minutes of ice time across these encounters.

Commenting on Rempe’s actions, New Jersey head coach Travis Green expressed concern, noting a perceived intent to injure in Rempe’s aggressive maneuvers.
