In a viral MMA match, a graphic moment unfolded as an athlete detonated his opponent’s cauliflower ear with an elbow strike.
Cauliflower ear, aptly named for its resemblance to the vegetable, is a common condition among athletes, particularly in combat sports characterized by grappling. This deformity occurs due to repeated blunt force trauma to the ear, leading to swelling and distortion of its shape. While prevalent among grapplers, it occasionally manifests in MMA bouts, especially when striking is involved.
One infamous incident occurred at ACA 166, hosted by the Russia-based promotion Absolute Championship Akhmat, where a welterweight clash between Edil Esengulov and Vinicius Cruz took center stage.
Throughout the intense encounter, Esengulov asserted dominance, eventually securing top position during a grappling exchange in the fourth round. From this advantageous position, he unleashed a barrage of ground-and-pound strikes, including devastating punches and elbows targeting Cruz’s head.
One particularly vicious elbow strike found its mark on Cruz’s left ear, already swollen with the telltale signs of cauliflower ear. The impact resembled a burst water balloon, showering blood across the canvas and both fighters.
Reacting swiftly, the referee halted the bout, directing Cruz to his corner for a prompt medical assessment. Following examination by the ringside physician, Cruz was deemed unfit to continue, resulting in Esengulov’s victory via doctor stoppage in the fourth round.
