A former student of Gracie Barra, a large international Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu academy, claims he has been threatened with a defamation lawsuit after posting memes and comments on social media describing the organization as a “cult.”
According to the Redditor’s post titled “Defamation lawsuit threat from Gracie Barra,” he joined a Gracie Barra academy but eventually left after being told he “didn’t fit in.” Some time later, he began sharing memes and stories from others portraying Gracie Barra as having cult-like qualities.
In response, the Redditor says he received a cease and desist letter from legal representatives of Gracie Barra Sandton, based in South Africa. The letter, shared via screenshots, demands he immediately remove the “offending content” from all platforms and cease publishing any further statements referring to Gracie Barra in a negative light.
Citing specific examples, the letter claims the Redditor’s posts containing phrases like “Gracie Barra cults” and images mocking people for training at Gracie Barra are “malicious and defamatory” to their client, who is part of the well-known international Gracie Barra brand.
The letter further demands the Redditor provide a written undertaking that he will not make any more defamatory comments relating directly or indirectly to their client, threatening potential legal action if he does not comply by the stated deadline.
Reacting to the legal threat, the Redditor expressed amusement, stating “It is beyond hilarious. I have to apologize and refrain from calling GB a cult. I can’t be the only one who thinks this is dumb, so you can’t leave a review on Google either????”
This incident has sparked a discussion around freedom of speech, parody/satirical content, and the defending of reputation versus legitimate public criticism for companies, particularly in the martial arts industry.
This isn’t the first time Gracie Barra has reacted in this way either. The infamous affiliation is known for being litigious and having a lot of policies aimed at extracting value from students.
