UFC lightweight Dan Hooker has admitted that Dustin Poirier actually choked him unconscious with a guillotine during their epic five-round battle in June 2020. This admission sheds new light on a Poirier obsession with the Guillotine.
Speaking in a recent interview, Hooker disclosed that during their clash, Poirier caught him in a tight guillotine. Contrary to what observers and even Poirier himself realized at the time, Hooker lost consciousness while trapped in the submission.
“He had me in the guillotine,” Hooker revealed. “He just didn’t even realize that I was out. So I actually woke up as the fight was still going. I was hanging down, he jumped the guillotine, and then he must’ve just run out of steam squeezing because I woke up and I was like, ‘The fight’s still going.'”
This occurred in the third round of their contest, which ultimately went the distance with Poirier winning by unanimous decision. The fact that Hooker was able to regain consciousness and continue without anyone noticing is kinda funny and probably a reason for why Poirier should not be spamming guillotines to begin with.
It also highlights the effectiveness of Poirier’s guillotine, a technique he’s known for attempting frequently, though until now, without a known submission victory in the UFC.
The admission from Hooker not only changes the narrative of their fight but also raises questions about the nature of submissions and fight-ending scenarios in MMA.
