When Actor Tom Hardy Explained Why He Competes in Jiu-Jitsu

Tom Hardy, the acclaimed English actor known for his roles in blockbuster films like “The Dark Knight Rises” and “Venom,” has found a new passion that extends beyond the silver screen: Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Hardy has reached the rank of BJJ purple belt and regularly participates in local BJJ tournaments under a pseudonym. While Hardy doesn’t advertise his presence, he’s more than happy to take pictures with other BJJ practitioners.

Back in 2022 Hardy participated in a championship organized by REORG, a global nonprofit organization, and took to Instagram to share his thoughts on the impact of this martial art on his life.

Hardy’s journey with Jiu-Jitsu began in 2018 when he stumbled upon a boxing club in West London during one of his training sessions. Intrigued by the sight of people grappling in their gis, he decided to explore the art further. Under the guidance of Jiu-Jitsu coach Carlos Santos, Hardy immersed himself in the discipline, committing to intense training sessions five days a week.

In his Instagram post, Hardy explained the profound effect Jiu-Jitsu has had on his life, particularly in relation to his personal struggles with addiction and mental health. “Addiction is difficult and complex stuff to navigate; as is mental health,” he wrote, describing these subjects as “deeply personal” and “extremely close to my heart.”

“Simple training, for me (as a hobby and a private love ) has been fundamentally key to further develop a deeper sense of inner resilience, calm and well being,” he said. “I can’t stress the importance it has had and the impact on my life and my fellow teammates.”

The post has been taken down since.

The actor emphasized the therapeutic benefits of Jiu-Jitsu, stating that it has been “fundamentally key to further develop a deeper sense of inner resilience, calm and well-being.” Hardy’s commitment to the sport goes beyond personal gain; he sees it as an opportunity to support others facing similar challenges. Through his participation in REORG events, he helps raise awareness for the organization’s work in supporting veterans, military personnel, and first responders through Jiu-Jitsu and fitness training.

Hardy’s coach, Carlos Santos, attests to the actor’s dedication, describing him as “a great champion” who “really loves Jiu-Jitsu.” Despite his celebrity status, Hardy participates in group classes, preferring to enjoy the art “like a normal person.” This approach has allowed him to fully immerse himself in the Jiu-Jitsu community and reap its benefits.

The impact of Jiu-Jitsu on Hardy’s life is particularly poignant given his past struggles. In a 2015 interview with Yahoo, he referred to himself as a “shameful suburban statistic” and expressed gratitude for his recovery, stating, “I am f***ing lucky to be here.”

Through his involvement in Jiu-Jitsu, Hardy has found not only a new hobby but a means of maintaining his mental health and supporting others.

As Hardy continues to balance his acting career with his passion for Jiu-Jitsu, his journey inspires others to explore the benefits of this martial art.
