Craig Jones Invitational Play by Play: Nick Rodriguez vs Owen Livesey

In a quarterfinal matchup at the Craig Jones Invitational, Nick “Nicky Rod” Rodriguez faced off against Owen Livesey in an exciting clash of styles. The match showcased Rodriguez’s evolving jiu-jitsu game against Livesey’s judo-influenced grappling.

As the match began, Rodriguez surprised many by immediately pulling guard, a tactic he had successfully employed in his previous match. This strategic choice demonstrated Rodriguez’s growing confidence in his bottom game, a far cry from his early days as a pure wrestler in jiu-jitsu competitions.

Livesey, however, was quick to respond, attempting to pass though getting no where.  Rodriguez’s guard retention skills were on full display as he repeatedly thwarted Livesey’s passing attempts. The American grappler utilized a combination of knee shields and frames to maintain his position, frustrating Livesey’s top game.

Midway through the first round, Rodriguez, showcasing his wrestling pedigree, secured a powerful single leg takedown, driving Livesey into the corner of the competition area. Once on the ground, Rodriguez demonstrated his crushing top control, maintaining a dominant back position while working to advance. Livesey, to his credit, displayed excellent defensive skills, initially preventing Rodriguez from securing a submission or definitively passing his guard.

The defining moment of the match came in the closing 90 seconds. Rodriguez managed to fully take Livesey’s back. With both hooks secured, he flattened out his opponent and began hunting for the rear-naked choke. With just 70 seconds remaining, Rodriguez secured the submission, forcing Livesey to tap to a tight rear-naked choke. The victory not only advanced Rodriguez to the semifinals but also served as a statement win, showcasing his evolution as a complete grappler.

The match highlighted Rodriguez’s continued development in jiu-jitsu. While his wrestling base remains a key component of his game, his improved guard work, back takes, and submission hunting demonstrate a well-rounded approach to grappling.

Rodriguez moves on to face Adam Bradley in the semifinals.
