Craig Jones Names His Top 5 Greatest Grapplers in History

In a recent appearance on The Jaxxon Podcast, accomplished Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt and grappling standout Craig Jones was asked to name the top 5 greatest grapplers in the history of the sport. Jones, who has made a name for himself by coming in 2nd at several major competitions like the Eddie Bravo Invitational and ADCC, gave his definitive list.

Roger Gracie

Taking the first spot is multiple-time world champion Roger Gracie of the famous Gracie family. Known for his mastery of the mount and cross-body ride, Gracie captured titles in both gi and no-gi competition during his illustrious career.

Gordon Ryan

At the top of Jones’ list is his former teammate Gordon Ryan. The two trained together as part of the famed Danaher Death Squad under coach John Danaher. Ryan has established himself as one of the most dominant and successful no-gi competitors ever, winning multiple ADCC titles and remaining undefeated for years.

Rafael Mendes

Rafael Mendes’ journey from a young prodigy to a BJJ legend exemplifies dedication, skill, and innovation. With a combined total of 10 world titles and 2 ADCC titles, Mendes’ influence extends far beyond the mat

Marcelo Garcia

Next up is the legendary Marcelo Garcia. The Brazilian is considered a prodigy of the sport, revolutionizing the game with his guard playing and submission skills. Garcia was a long-time instructor at his own New York academy and a major influence on a number of ‘New wave’ competitors.

Gabby Garcia

Gabrielle “Gabi” Lemos Garcia boasts of numerous championship titles to her name. Despite facing challenges, including a postive PED test in 2014, Garcia emerged unscathed and continued to excel in her career. She made history by becoming the first woman to win four ADCC gold medals and has garnered attention for her proposed matchup with Craig Jones. Although she suffered her first submission defeat in 2021, Garcia is one of mainstream names in BJJ.

While the order may be debated, Craig Jones’ top 5 list highlights many of the elite competitors who helped revolutionize the sport of grappling over the past couple of decades. As someone at the top level himself, Jones’ opinion carries substantial weight in the jiu-jitsu community.
