Rener Gracie conducted a marathon three-hour livestream addressing allegations from former Gracie University instructor Evandro Nunes, who recently denounced both Gracie and the broader BJJ community.
The livestream, which oscillated between tense confrontation and attempted reconciliation, laid bare the deep rifts within one of martial arts’ most prominent families.
Nunes, a black belt with nearly two decades of experience, has become increasingly vocal about what he describes as systemic issues within the Gracie organization. His public criticism reached a boiling point when he labeled Rener Gracie a “spineless rat” and took to social media to express his disillusionment. “I want people to know that these leaders who preach integrity may not always practice it,” Nunes stated in a pointed social media caption.
During the heated discussion, several contentious incidents came to light, most notably what became known as the “mountain lion incident.” Nunes had initially been excited to participate in a Gracie Breakdown video analyzing a mountain lion attack, but the situation quickly took an unexpected turn when he arrived at the filming location.
“I vividly remember saying ‘I’m not doing it’ and I stood in peace. I had no doubts,” Nunes recounted during the livestream, describing his initial refusal to wear a mountain lion costume complete with cat ears. According to Nunes, Gracie spent approximately 20 minutes pressuring him to wear the costume, including suggesting that another instructor “would do it.” The situation allegedly escalated when Gracie became “very aggressive” with takedowns and submission during the demonstration, including breaking a stick on his neck and stepping on his throat with excessive force.
The incident took an even more odd turn when Gracie reportedly produced a WWE wrestling mask and instructed Nunes to remove his shirt and wear it while hiding in bushes for an additional scene. Nunes claims this pattern of escalating requests was part of a broader “shame ritual” culture he experienced during his time with the organization.
Nunes’ wife Ariel interjected during the discussion, explaining that fear of losing his livelihood had prevented him from speaking up sooner about ethical concerns. “He was afraid he would get fired any minute that he came about anything that he said,” she stated, adding that tensions with Rener’s brother Ryron also factored into the deteriorating relationship.
Significant disagreements emerged around a 2020 agreement making Nunes a manager for Gracie Survival Tactics (GST) instructors. Nunes said he initiated expanding the program and wrote training materials voluntarily before being offered just 1.5% ownership instead of the expected 10%. While Gracie maintained the compensation was fair and cited messages where Nunes praised the deal, the dispute highlights broader questions about value and recognition within the organization.
“I needed the money, I was providing for my family and I turned a blind eye,” Nunes admitted when questioned about his previous silence. Gracie challenged this narrative, asking, “For 10 years that you’re working with and for us and side by side and growing amazing things and making a bunch of money doing it, why not speak about it then?”
This controversy adds to Rener Gracie’s already complicated reputation within the BJJ community. His recent role as an expert witness in the Jack Greener trial, where he charged over $100,000 for his services, drew widespread criticism, including from his own family. Royler Gracie publicly disagreed with Rener’s characterization of the incident.
The controversy echoes previous disputes involving the Gracie family, including Rener’s father’s attempted trademarking of the Gracie jiu-jitsu name to prevent other family members from using it, and Rener’s own controversial online blue belt promotion program from a decade ago. While Gracie eventually modified his online certification program in response to criticism, creating a variant blue belt for online students, these incidents have contributed to ongoing skepticism about his business practices within the BJJ community.
The three-hour livestream, while extensive, appears to have resolved little. Instead, it highlighted fundamental disagreements about expectations, authority, and ethical responsibilities in the martial arts business. Nunes’ allegations of “double standards” in policy enforcement and questioning of testing practices remain contentious points of debate, while Gracie continues to characterize Nunes’ criticism as an attempt to promote his new coaching business focused on “reclaiming power from false leaders.”
“So then I question myself: Why, why then, if he leaves because of pride, why then is he speaking so badly about the opportunity that for so long was the best opportunity that he’s ever had professionally? And then it made sense. ”
Evandro interjected: ” We all know I’m selling a course, and that’s fine, how to reclaim your power. ”
In short, Evandro is accusing Rener of peer pressuring him into embarassing situations. There was talk of manipulative contract negotiations, giving instructors belts even when they don’t pass tests,  Double standards in enforcing organizational rules as well as prioritizing profitability over integrity.
There was a claim of a s*x party as well as referencing an unspecified incident involving Rener’s brother that Evandro suggests would have gotten other instructors fired.
“Do you remember the party they invited me to where I had to sign a contract to come in? That was a very ugly party with sacks. Do you remember all? Do you remember that? Me, you, and TBA? Do you remember that? You don’t remember? Hold on. You don’t? I was at a party with you and Ryron, making s*x, eating sushi off a nak*d person.”
“I learned that Hollywood-style, they do shame rituals, and I saw a picture of Diddy at a party, literally with the same sushi table with the woman with the same leaves. That’s when it clicked for me. Until then, I didn’t know. Guys, I didn’t know I was being recruited. Who knows what that was? But I trusted Rener and I trusted Ryron, and they took me to a party in which disturbing things happened there that I will never forget and stain my soul.”
Rener denied there was such a party. Craig Jones was quick to ask an invite. No, really.
