Mica Galvao and father release statements trying to justify USADA suspension

Mica Galvao is a young and promising Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu competitor who, at just 19 years old, has already won numerous tournaments and gold medals. He made history in 2022 when he became the youngest ever IBJJF world champion.

Fans had high hopes for Mica, but many were disappointed when he failed a PED test. The IBJJF confirmed the news and stripped him of his world champion title, and he has also been banned from competing for one year.

Mica Galvao tested positive for PEDs and was stripped of his IBJJF World title. According to his father, Mica had low testosterone, and was prescribed something for it.

This news came as a surprise to many, given Mica’s young age and potential. In a recent press release, the USADA announced the news and the penalties that Mica would face.

Clomiphene was the reason for Mica’s positive test result. It is typically used to induce ovulation in infertile women who are trying to conceive. It is also known as an ovulatory stimulant and works similarly to estrogen..

The USADA bans clomiphene because it can significantly increase testosterone levels, providing a person with enhanced physical abilities.

Mica’s father, who is also his coach, took to Instagram to explain his son’s situation. He stated that Mica had low testosterone and was attempting to raise it by using clomiphene.

“Mica had first full exam in life in 2021 through a partnership with an American clinic.
.
In his first exam done on 05/13/21 it was detected that he had 228.92 of testosterone
.
Value below the minimum of a common man which is 300.
.
On 09/22/21 with four months of treatment he evolved to 292.89 of testosterone
.
On medical advice, he started using clomiphene in order to reverse this situation that did not change and reached 380.11 on 03/22/22 and it was for this use that he was caught. If a professional says that this is the treatment, how could I argue with him if I didn’t have the technical training to do this?
.
We fulfilled our 2022 schedule and then Mica spent four months without competing and without intense training (October to January) he took a vacation with his girlfriend and to our surprise he reached 630 of testosterone on 01/10/23 and this is the testosterone he has today.
.
Mica underwent a series of exams at the best center in Brazil. It was detected that Mica’s low testosterone came from stress, the hard training load that I submitted him and the excess of commitments that his manager arranged, reaching a high level competition per week.
.
The tests done on him for almost two years prove that at no time did he have testosterone that would lead him to an advantage. For those who think that his low test is the result of a post cycle, I ask the following question: if he is used to cycling because in 2021 he did not use a test to regulate hormones since he would not be tested that year?
.
I exploited my son to the fullest and regretted doing that to him. My goal was for him to bring results and benefit everyone around him but we never cheat.
.
Mica’s low testosterone never got in the way of winning. He beat the main athletes in his category riding below what he could ride. But his low forehead was taking a toll on his mental health and self-esteem and I’m happy to see him doing well. All exams and the truth is there. Interpret as you wish. I have a lot to talk about but this is the last post on this subject.”

Galvao also personally addressed the PED test failure saying:

“You all already know the news and I want to explain my version now. My doctor used a something prohibited by Usada in my treatment. My father and I have always tried to approach the best professionals to help my career and, unfortunately, this mistake happened and I accept it.

Directed towards my fans, the people who have admired my work and my career since I was young. My sincerest apologies, I am also upset about this situation.

I’m going to start from scratch again, it’s never been easy for me and it won’t be. I come from Manaus, where opportunities are few. I fought a lot to get where I am. I don’t mind tracing that path to the top again, my journey doesn’t end here, it’s just begun. You will see me many times on the mat in 2023. “
