WATCH: Tourist forced to defend himself against Kangaroo in Zoo

An incident at a Perth zoo has caught the attention of viewers as an American tourist found himself in a tense altercation with a kangaroo. The tourist’s daughter recorded the encounter, capturing the man’s nervous smile as he defended himself against the aggressive marsupial.

The video, shared on TikTok, was accompanied by a caption from the man’s daughter, explaining that her father intervened to protect a woman from the kangaroo’s unwanted advances. The clip begins with the woman attempting to distance herself from the animal, only for the tourist to step in between them.

In response to the tourist’s intervention, the kangaroo stood up, lunging and clawing at the man as he attempted to keep the creature at bay. The situation escalated as both men tried to hold the kangaroo’s front paws to prevent scratching, but the animal retaliated by launching its powerful hind legs while balancing on its tail.

Despite the challenging circumstances, the father remained composed, even smiling, as he attempted to subdue the kangaroo by grabbing its neck. In the background, a woman’s laughter could be heard as she jokingly encouraged the man to tussle with the kangaroo.

The assault continued, with the kangaroo persistently pursuing the men, kicking and jumping in their direction. Eventually, a zoo staff member intervened, instructing the men to walk away. With the staff member’s intervention, the kangaroo calmed down and returned to the ground.

The viral nature of the video led to various reactions from viewers, with some likening the encounter to street scrap, suggesting the kangaroo was defending its territory. Others perceived it as harmless playfulness, describing the kangaroo’s actions as a “casual spar” with the visitors.

Understanding why kangaroos attack is important in preventing such incidents. While kangaroos are typically docile creatures, they may perceive humans as threats or sparring opponents. They can also become aggressive when protecting their group or offspring. Additionally, kangaroos that have lost their instinctive fear of humans, often due to human interaction from a young age, may pose a higher risk.

Environmental factors can also contribute to kangaroo aggression, such as unfamiliar terrains or habitat disruptions caused by natural disasters. In encounters with humans, kangaroos tend to use their paws to push or grapple, mirroring their behavior when combating other kangaroos.

To avoid provoking kangaroos, it is crucial to exercise caution. Approaching a kangaroo directly, standing tall, staring, or extending arms can be perceived as threatening. It is best to avoid getting close to male kangaroos engaging in sparring or fighting, and to refrain from moving between a female kangaroo and her joey. Additionally, pet owners should prevent their dogs from approaching kangaroos, as it can lead to dangerous situations.

By understanding kangaroo behavior and following precautionary measures, visitors to kangaroo habitats can ensure a safe and respectful coexistence with these unique creatures.
