Jiu-Jitsu helps student resolve a parking dispute ‘amicably’

Jui-Jitsu Black belt and Gracie Jiu-Jitsu instructor Arman Fathi recently shared the experience of one of their students, Gabriel.

Gabriel had a disagreement with a neighbor over a parking space some time back. The neighbor, Elijah, still harbored strong feelings about the issue. Recently, the neighbor allegedly attacked Gabriel.

The student’s Jui-Jitsu experience kicked in and it seems like they reacted with a double-leg takedown. Then Gabriel applied a secure mount on the attacker.

Arman Fathi wrote:

“One of my students, Gabriel, was jumped by a guy in his neighborhood yesterday. To put things into context, this dude and Gabriel had a dispute over a parking spot sometime ago and would see each other on occasion. It had never really resolved, and the dude approached Gabriel out of nowhere and started swinging. Gabriel was able to take the fight to the ground with a double leg and pass the guard into mount. That’s where the video starts, his brother Angel who is also a student was the one filming.“

“He tells me that before he started training Jiujitsu he probably would’ve started swinging at the guy nonstop, which would not have been a good scene, especially considering that the guys lady and kid were there trying to break things up. Gabriel was acting strictly in self-defense, neutralized the situation, and did not take any damage nor did he dish any damage to the other guy. The dude left with a bruised ego but nothing else, essentially walking away after he was outmatched by someone he outweighed by roughly 50 pounds.”

This is a great example of how Jui-Jitsu can be applied for self-defense. Gabriel’s instructor praised him for not taking any damage and for not dishing out damage to the alleged attacker.

Arman Fathi seemed pleased that with around 20-25 classes, a young student like Gabriel was able to stand their ground in such a situation.

Presently, Jiu-Jitsu programs are being offered at schools and universities as a part of their self-defense and anti-bullying programs.
